Christmas at Sherbondy’s

We have officially entered the holiday season. One of my favorite events in November is Small Business Saturday. Each year, I try to go to my favorite local businesses searching for as many Christmas gifts as I can find. It is a day that I intentionally shop small every year and gets me in the habit of stopping by some of my favorite stores all year long.

This year, Sherbondy’s Garden Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa is celebrating their Christmas open house tomorrow, November 24, 2018, on Small Business Saturday. The event runs from 11-3 and includes photo opportunities with Santa, cookies and drinks, free ornaments and holiday glasses for children. They are selling Christmas trees, holiday wreaths and poinsettias in addition to their normal indoor house plants and garden supplies.

I stopped by today and they were as busy as elves creating beautiful wreaths in the back. Everyone was very excited about tomorrow’s event and right now the greenhouse is filled to the brim with beautiful poinsettias of all colors.

You just can’t beat a visit to a greenhouse in the winter. In our cold months, the warm air, smell of dirt and the sound of running water can’t be found anywhere else besides a greenhouse. It’s where I escape to experience summer in the winter.

I spoke with one of the owner’s, Kip, who said that this year they have what’s called “Princettias,” which are the miniature poinsettias pictured below.

Sherbondy’s is a locally owned and operated garden center and landscape firm. It’s a great place to visit at all times during the year. Bring the kids for an indoor walk, feed the fish, visit the birds and buy yourself some fresh greens between 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Last year, I wrote about how to make your own mini-living Christmas tree and I purchased my Norfolk Island Pine at Sherbondy’s. Remember to water your tree when the soil feels dry and keep the area humid. Norfolk Island Pines like bright direct or indirect light. Learn how to make your own here.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy time with family and friends this holiday season. If you are looking for a way to give back this year, consider New Visions Homeless Center’s Christmas celebration. Find more info here.
