Six Holiday Plants That Make Great Gifts

Six Holiday Plants that Make Great GiftsThis holiday season, consider giving a beautiful seasonal plant as a gift to one of your friends, coworkers or family members. They provide great indoor color, freshness and delight all season long. Here are six great holiday plants to give this year.

  • Poinsettia
  • Cyclamen
  • Dracenia
  • Norfolk Island Pine
  • Paperwhites
  • Amaryllis

First up is a classic with a twist. The poinsettia (pictured below in pink).

Poinsettia
If you think about it, poinsettias create an unbelievably pop of color unlike anything else. Their huge colored leaves are extremely unique from other houseplants. Consider this classic plant in red or in one of the many other options available on the market today. Read my poinsettia care guide here.

Cyclamen
The trick with Cyclamen is that they like it cold! They actually prefer temperatures between 50-60 degrees, which is not a normal temperature in most people’s homes or offices. They are also a little tricky with water as they like it moist but not wet. Read my recent post about the Cyclamens in the Marjorie K. Daugherty Conservatory.

Bromeliad
These are my number one pick for giving a holiday plant. They are very versatile, easy to care for and last much longer than the holiday season. Read this post about the 15′ bromeliad tree at Mulhall’s this year along with how to care for them.

Norfolk Island Pine
Last year, I decorated my Norfolk Island Pine as a living Christmas tree and wrote a blog about it. They make great, easy to care for house plants all season long. Water your tree when the soil feels dry and keep the area humid. Norfolk Island Pines like bright direct or indirect light. Read this post here.

Paperwhites
Paperwhites or Narcissus papyraceus are just plain fun. Get your bulb started in just water and watch it grow and bloom in no time. Paperwhites are inexpensive and you can normally buy them in bulk. Give your paperwhites as a gift with a  special “bulb vase” and you will make someone’s day.

Amaryllis
Amaryllis are another great option as a holiday gift. They are easy to grow and very forgiving for beginner plant parents. Here is a link to a blog post on forcing amaryllis bulbs and then here is an update on how they did.

Consider one of these great plants as a gift this year and make sure to shop local when possible. If you are growing one of these plants this year, snap a pic and tag me on social media at The Blooming Farmhouse on Facebook, @thebloomingfarmhouse on Instagram and @thebloomingfarm Twitter.
