If you have the winter blues, you must visit a local garden center. It’s the only place that feels like summer in the dead of winter. After extensive research, these are my top six favorite nurseries or garden centers in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area in alphabetical order. Whether you are in Council Bluffs or out in west O, this list has every place you might want to go for your summer-fix.
Canoyers Garden Center
When in South Omaha, visit Canoyers Garden Center in Papillion, Nebraska. Originally established near Griswold, Iowa, Canoyers Garden Center has expanded to Ankeny, Grimes and Papillion. The Griswold location is no longer open to the public.
Open seasonally (April – June), Diller’s Greenhouses is a family owned and operated nursery in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They offer customers quality plants and a great selection. Their plants are grown onsite and their helpful staff will help you find the right plants for your home and garden. Jeff and Rhonda, the third generation, are the current owners and took over in 1977. The business began in 1925 by Jeff’s grandfather, Lawrence Diller.
I purchased a Passion Flower Vine from Diller’s that was just wonderful and plan to get there early this year to snag another one.
Indian Creek Nursery
One of my favorite little spots in Omaha is the back greenhouse of Indian Creek Nursery in Omaha, Nebraska. The business was established in 1966 and is located at 303 N Saddle Creek Rd. The back greenhouse is a year-round oasis where I can always find something interesting. View my prior blog with lots of pictures at Indian Creek here.
When out in West Omaha, Lanoha Nurseries might be the place for you. Lanoha Nurseries is one of the largest nursery and garden centers growing trees and plant material as well as providing landscape design and construction services for residential and commercial projects throughout the Midwest. They boast having more than 1,000 acres of locally grown trees and 10,000 sq. ft. of plant material production and provide complete landscape design and construction services as well as a full-service nursery and garden center to help maintain new and existing landscapes.
Never taking short-cuts on design, Mulhall’s in Omaha, Nebraska has quite the family legacy. Shortly after immigrating to the US, John Mulhall and his wife, Maureen, opened Mulhall’s Landscaping & Lawn Service, operating the business out of their garage at 69th and Blondo. Three generations later, they’re still committed to making Omaha a more beautiful place to live. And now a team of a few hundred people – real people whose lives revolve around helping our community embrace the dense, natural beauty of this place we call home. Read my prior blog on Mulhalls here.
With over 44 years of experience, we all know Sherbondy’s Greenhouse is one of my favorites spots to visit year-round in Council Bluffs, Iowa. View my recent post about visit Sherbondy’s at Christmas here.
