Trees, Trees and more Trees

This weekend Ryan picked up and planted a lot of trees on our property. He planted Red Oaks, Burr Oaks and Norway Spruce. Below are pictures of the Red Oaks. I’d have to ask, but I bet it was a total of over 20 trees. Everything is starting to bud. Spring is finally here.  I…

Flower Field in September

Dahlias and celosia are the stars of the garden right now. It’s really fun to photograph across the four 100 ft. rows and find pretty layers in the shot. My favorite time to shoot is late in the day when the sun is almost gone. Happy gardening!

Red & Gold Bouquet

In honor of yesterday’s game, ISU vs. Iowa, I created this ISU themed arrangement. As some of you know, I attend Iowa State University – GO STATE! Unfortunately they lost the game but I still hope they have a great rest of the season. What do you think of this color combo in an arrangement? This…

Dinnerplate Dahlias

Dinnerplate dahlias are SO fun to grow. They are difficult to work into arrangements but look stunning alone in a vase. They take longer to bloom and have less blooms per plant but I think they are very worth the time and space in the garden. I absolutely love this color palette of creamy peaches,…

Dahlias at Dusk

The dahlia field is just unbelievable right now. I’ve been telling people that it peaks every day at dusk and here is some proof. The light during the last portion of ‘magic hour’ is gorgeous anywhere but here on the farm it’s at a whole new level. What do you think?

Sunset Bouquet

I made a couple of bouquets tonight right at sunset. This is not my typical color palette but I am trying new things tonight. I am just in love with Celosia! Also included in this bouquet: Dahlia, Cosmos, Zinnia, Smoke Bush and Sedum. I was able to capture these photos just before it got too…

Bursting with Dahlias and Zinnias

I made this bouquet for my fiancé’s grandma and we dropped it off tonight. It’s just bursting with zinnias, dahlias, scabiosa, dill, queen anne’s lace, amaranth, scented geranium, cosmos and strawflower. This arrangement includes the widest array of flowers so far this season. What do you guys think? More arrangements here on the blog?

Café au Lait

You might have seen my recent post about the bouquet I made using Café au Lait dahlias.  I took some more photos of them in the field this weekend. I thought I had at least twelve tubers this year but some came up completely stark white so I think only have around 7-8 true Cafés. I’m…

Holland Festival

The garden is just way too beautiful right now not to take loads of photos. I went out tonight right before sunset to take photos and then make a big harvest. If you remember, Holland Festival is one of my favorite dahlias and I have a lot blooming right now. Enjoy! Have you ever had…

Pink Dahlia Arrangement

This is what my dahlia field looks like right now. Out of around 290 dahlia tubers I planted I ended up losing several to virus, rot and other issues. However, the ones that made it are just absolutely beautiful. Are your dahlias blooming yet?

Bouquet of Café au Lait Dahlias

How gorgeous is this bouquet featuring the one and only Café au Lait? This vase color and shape along with this perfect mix of foliage just really sets them off. Also included in this bouquet: love in a puff, black knight scabiosa, sedum autumn joy, scented geranium, millet, smoke bush and viburnum. The contrast is amazing! What…

2017 Dahlia Varieties

I decided I am going to try to keep a running list of all dahlia blooms and their names on this blog post for this year. Each time I photograph new blooms I will add them to list instead of creating a new post. If one is missing, I will find the name and label…

Mid-July Mixed Bouquet

This is a mixed bouquet featuring everything that is blooming right now in mid-July here in Southwest, Iowa. Dahlias, Gaura, Lisanthus, Larkspur, Rudbeckia with scented Geranium, Honeysuckle, Lemon Balm and Smokebush for foliage. What’s blooming in your yard?

How To: Fall Dahlia Cuttings

I took cuttings, dipped them in water, dipped them in rooting hormone and then planted them in seed starter potting soil. I did this last weekend and they look really great already.

After the Frost

What do the dahlias look like after a frost? They look pretty black and dead. Right now they are busy sending all of their energy down to the tubers.

Frosted Flowers

The flowers were hauntingly beautiful yesterday morning. This short period of beauty did not last long. Everything is now mostly black and done for the year. Lots of not-so-beautiful work coming in the next few weeks. Have you had your first frost yet?

First Frost Coming Tonight

It’s supposed to freeze tonight on October 12, 2016 here is Southwest Iowa. I took one last stroll through the garden tonight with my camera before we drop to 30 degrees late tonight.

Favorite Dahlia Variety

The first dahlia I bought is called Holland Festival. This is the dahlia that started it all for me.
